Siberian State Medical University is one of the leading medical universities in Russia. The history of this Medical University dates back to 1878 when Emperor Alexander II founded the first university in the Asian part of Russia. Imperial Tomsk University opened in 1888 with only one faculty – the Faculty of Medicine.
Founded more than 135 years ago, the university was originally formed as a research and educational center. Over the years, the University has become one of the best educational, scientific and medical complexes in Russia for training and certification of healthcare professionals in the field of surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, pathology, histology, pharmacology, microbiology, and many others.
The basis for the development of medical education and research in Tomsk was laid by outstanding Russian scientists in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan.
The world famous scientific schools were formed and successfully developed. Among them is a school of therapists (the founder is Professor M. G. Kurlov, who developed a system for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, sanatorium treatment in the east of the country; among his students are Professor S. M. Timashev, P. Lomovitsky, M. D. Liberov, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, D.D. Yablokov). Unique surgical operations of professors E.G. Salischeva, P.I. Tikhov, A.G. Savinykh, V.M. Mouse.

The founder of the world-class scientific morphological school was Professor A.S. Dogel, who was a member of the International Nobel Prize Award Committee. Professor G.M. Iosifov and Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences D.A. Zhdanov were known to the world community, thanks to the works on the morphology of the lymphatic system.
SSMU today includes 7 faculties, Medical and Pharmaceutical College, Central Research Laboratory, 8 research centers, interdisciplinary teaching, and research laboratories and its own clinics, three anatomic Museums with unique collections and the region’s largest scientific medical library.
For many years Siberian State Medical University has been among the top five leading medical universities in Russia according to the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The Medical University enrolls more than 5000 people annually. From year to year, there is a steady increase in the number of students coming to study at the Siberian State Medical University from other regions of Russia, CIS and from abroad.
In total, over 60 thousand doctors and pharmacists have been trained at the university, and about 40 thousand health professionals have improved their skills during the improvement cycles. Among the graduates of SibSMU are more than 700 doctors of science, 42 academicians, 25 corresponding members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 2 Presidents of the Academy of Medical Sciences (N.N. Burdenko, V.D. Timakov), 15 State Prize laureates, the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation (A. I.Potapov). Leading scientists of the university were the founders and organizers of the Research Institute of Pharmacology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Institute of Cardiology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Institute of Oncology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Institute of Medical Genetics of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Tomsk). Taking into account the experience of the Siberian State Medical University, a system of medical institutes and universities in Siberia and the Far East (in Barnaul, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Irkutsk, etc.) was created.
